Becoming an Advocate and Bringing Awareness

Today's post is a little off-topic for me, but it is about something that is close to my heart.

When I graduated college and started my first job, one of the first friends I made was a great guy named Anthony Martinez. He and his fiance were a great couple and I was thrilled to witness their marriage a few years later. I was even more overjoyed at the birth of their children.

A little more than a year ago, their younger daughter was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. Thankfully, Anthony's wife has worked in the field for a long time so they were able to begin early intervention. While she is making strides, we all want so much for Gisselle and anyone on the Autism Spectrum.

Anthony was just interviewed on a local cable station in New York, and I encourage you to watch it. He not only shares his family's story, but he talks about what it is to be a man dealing with a child with autism. He encourages men to feel, to get involved and to become advocates.

I don't do this often, but it would mean a lot to me if you would consider donating to his page in honor of his sweet little girl. Any amount will help - a dollar or $100, it doesn't matter. What matters is we support families that are advocating for their loved ones and standing up for them when they can't.

What is Autism: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. They include autistic disorder, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger syndrome. With the May 2013 publication of the new DSM-5 diagnostic manual, these autism subtypes will be merged into one umbrella diagnosis of ASD.

ASD can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math and art.

What can you do?

Happy Earth Day!

I'm not the religious type at all, but if there is one day a year I hold sacred (other than cyber Monday), it's earth day. I started my career as an environmentalist and did that for 8 years. I learned to love and appreciate nature no matter where you can find it, and to treat the earth with as much respect and dignity as it deserves. I get irrationally upset when I hear people denying the existence of climate change, or when people throw things out of the window of their car. It hurts me to see natural spaces polluted. I worked for a long time to better these situations, and other related to the environment such as open space issues, clean water issues, pollution prevention, etc.

As I've gotten older, my experience of the earth has expanded into moving away from the processed foods I grew up on and eating natural, whole foods. I slip up sometimes - sometimes for long periods of time - but my body knows that what comes from the earth and feeds from the earth is best for me. I'm spending more time in the produce section than anywhere else and want to do my best to eat in the best way I know how.

We only have one earth left, so let's cherish it.

Back from a little siesta

I haven't blogged in a while because I was in a fun, magical place called the hospital. I had some sort of colitis attack that left me in an indescribable amount of pain and other stuff that you just don't want to know about. I was there for 5 days, lost 10lbs, and got sent home with antibiotics.

One of the things that I said I'd do this April is focus on food. And a colitis attack will make you do just that. I was fed a steady diet of broth, weak tea, orange jello (not the good kind), lemon icees and water.  Now that I am back home I have to figure out what I can eat that won't upset the stomach, and what will make me ultimately feel better.

I had a discussion with a friend a few weeks ago about my depression being a little bit out of control and how I was looking at food as a source of comfort, and that upset me. I lost 50lbs because I learned to see food as nutrition and sustenance and removed the deep emotional connection to it. Now coming out of the hospital, food doesn't really have an appeal at all - as a measure of comfort or sustenance.

I'll eat because I know I have to eat, but it's really bringing me back to the basics.  Whole foods, nutrient dense foods, and foods that will energize me.

Thanks to colitis, I have no desire to eat any sort of processed foods right now.

I guess you get what you ask for. I wanted a way to stop seeing food as comfort and the universe abided. Lesson learned, no need to repeat, thank you very much.

Sunday Musings

First I have to say I am having so much fun using voice to text feature on my iPad. It is freaking awesome. It makes writing my I have tremors so much easier.

This is an awesome weekend. My husband and I had an amazing quality time together and we just had so much fun. We didn't do anything seriously active but we spent the entire weekend talking about everything and it is amazing to have a connection with someone like that.

We talked about how we really want to get back on track with our goals, and while my health is an issue, we both want to do more physical stuff like hiking, biking, etc. It's great to have someone like him on my team.

So meal planning starts now, and exercise starts first thing in the morning. I'm bringing it back.

Happy Friday!!! April Goals are now SET!

I have been out of it for the last week or so dealing with some lupus issues. The good news is that my neurologist found the right combination of meds that is damn near a miracle cure. The bad news is that it knocks me on my ass and has me sleeping for 2-3 hours after every dose. It also makes me ridiculously hungry.

Not the way I wanted to start April, but I can't really kvetch too much about it. Once I get this narcoleptic feeling under control I feel like I can take on the world.

I've been talking about setting April goals for a while, and given everything that has transpired the first week, I have decided that April will be my month of getting back to eating for wellness. I've been sloppy with my diet, but now that I have yet another med working against me, I need to do all i can to keep my weight in check even while I don't feel well. I am still contemplating what the best food lifestyle change is best for me, so my posts this month will explore that.

So hopefully this month will be full of recipes and pictures of yummy foods and my getting back into my groove.
