It's been a while

I'd like to say that I haven't posted a blog in a while because I've been off having exciting adventures or working on some top secret project. The truth is that I've been working really hard on my recovery.

My hospital stays left me totally messed up - muscle atrophy, ridiculous fatigue, and a weakened immune system. I was basically confined to my apartment with trips to doctors' offices because I was not stable enough to do anything else. Added to the fact that I'm now on disability, I have a lot of free time on my hands and have been looking for ways to fill it.

Slowly but surely I have begun to improve and I posted some of the highlights. But it has been work. It may have not been a traditional workout, but it's been a workout nonetheless. First it was regaining my strength to stand. Then it was walking (with or without Luke) without falling. Then I had to master climbing the 15 stairs to my apartment. (That one took a while). Then I had to figure out how to go out for short periods of time without falling or getting so fatigued that the husband nearly carried me home.

Next week I start pool therapy twice a week and regular PT once a week. Eventually, I'll graduate from that and finally start using my membership for LA fitness. It happens that I live in the middle of nowhere, so the gym is practically empty all the time. No waiting for machines, and the pool almost always has at least two lanes available. I'm planning on doing the AquaFit class there a few times a week.

I really wanted to run a 5k, but I'm going to let my body tell me when I'm ready. There's a color run in August near me, but it just doesn't sound like fun - August in a desert valley.

So I'm scaling back my ambition and my goal for the rest of the summer is to exercise consistently and eat right. Because everyone needs goals.
