I'm back and what I learned

Despite being an advocate for taking care of oneself completely, I fail at it miserably all the time. I got really burnt out and my body just said NO MORE and crapped out on me which landed me in the hospital for a full week.

So what I learned there:

Sleep.
Nutrition.
Exercise.
Gratitude.
Acceptance.
Love.
Self-care.
Community.
Genuine connections to others.

If you don't have these things, your mind and body will never be well. I am home now with my body in somewhat working order, but way better than it was before, and my mind a lot clearer. I've been sleeping 8+ hours a night and eating balanced meals and reconnecting with friends and family I've isolated myself from. I feel good.

On a break

I'm dealing with some serious medical stuff right now so I'm taking a break from everything except sleeping, occasionally eating, occasionally responding to emails, occasionally perusing facebook, etc. I don't know how long this break will last. But just wanted to keep my peeps updated. If you have my personal email, you can email me. If not, I do check my twitter and blog feeds occasionally.

I'll be back...at some point.

#Whole30 Day 1

I confess, it has been super easy because I worked from home today. I also used some Pre-Made Paleo meals.  Honestly, it's one of the simplest food routines I've ever been on. I am eating lots of meat and veggies.Yes, I do have cravings, but I just ask myself "Would I eat steamed fish and broccoli right now?" and if the answer is no, I drink tea or water.

I do have a bit of a headache, but that's more from waiting too long to eat dinner. So far so good!

Day 0 - my test run

I have a confession - I'm totally scared of the Whole30. I am afraid I'm going to fail miserably, and I almost let this fear stop me before I even began. I decided that today would be my day 0 - my test day - to see how I felt. I am feeling pretty lousy health-wise, since my lupus is acting up badly, and I didn't I had enough in my health account to make good decisions.

But then I realized I was overthinking things. I have 10 premade meals. I have frozen veggies that have no sugar or added bad stuff. I have plenty of meat in my freezer. I needed to shut my brain up and just do it.

So I pulled out my peppered beef and some brussel sprouts and just heated it up. It's delicious. And filling.

I have more brussel sprouts for lunch and I have another premade protein. Same for dinner. I can do this. I will do this.

Whole30 Workshop

Saturday, January 12th changed my life. I met the amazing Melissa and Dallas Hartwig. I am starstruck  blown away and in awe of them. They are amazingly intelligent, sharp, witty, funny, and genuine. And they are stunningly gorgeous. Truly, the whole package. I want to be Melissa when I grow up :)

I learned so much from them, and felt like they made sense of things that I inherently knew but didn't know how to verbalize.Where do I begin???

The day was hosted by Team CrossFit Academy in Monrovia, CA. What a wonderful facility! If I ever have the capacity to do something at the intensity of crossfit again, I would highly recommend them. The owner, Eric, was a gracious host and both staff and members were so wonderfully helpful and awesome.

Then came Dallas and Melissa. Even though I had read the workshop packet and the first few chapters of It Starts with Food, I really didn't know what to expect. My BFF Cecilia attended the workshop the week before and was excited, but I didn't want to sip the koolaid too early.

They started off with talking about the scientific research, clinical experience and scientific experience that back their recommendations. I was pleased to see that they were apparently well versed in science, but I wasn't fully convinced.  Then they started talking about their four good food standards and started getting into the real science, and I was sold. Kool-aid down the hatch. I'm a convert.

In my day-job, I spend a lot of time with doctors and understand a good bit of basic science. So when they started talking my language, I knew that not only were they in the know, they were legit. Not only did they understand and were able to translate the basic science, but they also understood and took into account the extreme importance of the psychological aspects of food. I was particularly impressed that they took time to focus on autoimmune diseases and the role food plays in the way it affects our (autoimmune disease living people) lives.

I would be remiss if I didn't give a shout-out to Pre-Made Paleo and Chef Rich who made a fabulous lunch and convinced me that paleo eating does not have to be at all boring. I can't begin to tell you how good the food was...and highly recommend that you check out their delivery service.

I have a good ten pages of hand-written notes, and I don't want to give a book report or make it easy for you to not read the book. So I will say this.

  • I learned that sometimes hormones are stronger than willpower.
  • I learned that it's important to have standards for your food.
  • I learned that I'm not the only one with a sugar addiction.
  • I confirmed that the Standard American Diet (SAD) is ridiculously stupid.
  • I was disappointed to see that such a huge topic is not addressed in the regular medical community when it is the one thing we can change.
  • I learned why previous efforts have been only moderately successful.
  • I realized that some of the things that I learned on my journey so far were on point - grains are bad for me personally - and there is still so much I have to learn through self experimentation. A great example was finding out that eggs may not be great for someone with autoimmune diseases. It makes so much sense considering how I felt yesterday after eating eggs for breakfast.
Most importantly, I learned that I am passionately committed to making this my new lifestyle.

I'll admit, I'm scared. I am worried that I'll fail. I'm worried that I'll give up and not meet my goals. The Whole30 is not easy...but then again, living with lupus, working full time, grad school, marriage, navigating health insurance, and life is not easy.

But whether it takes me 30 days to get through it, or 90, I will do it. I will make this LIFESTYLE CHANGE. I am worth it. My life, my friends and family are worth it.   If I can conquer this, I can conquer anything.

Fabulous Friday

I'll be honest. When I woke up, I felt anything but fabulous. I am over a week late for my monthly infusion of lupus meds, I slept great until about 5am, my stomach was upset, and I needed a good two more hours of sleep.

So what did I do? I got up and did some yoga.

That's right. I'm tired of staying in bed and whining. I have health challenges that are NEVER going away. I need to do whatever I can to get my body to function in the way I want. So I'm exercising.

Tomorrow I'm starting Day 0 of the Whole30 and am attending the Whole9Life workshop in Monrovia, CA. I'm super excited because my bffae (best friend forever and ever) Cecilia started a little over a week ago and she's doing great on it. I trust pretty much anything she says/does, so I'm all for it. She's never steered me wrong.

So after a few days of needed rest, I'm back in the game. 40 minutes of restorative yoga and 30 minutes of handweight and bodyweight exercises. I'm really focused on my core and arms, as those are my weakest areas.

While I wish I could go back to sleep, I'm ready to tackle this Friday, which will be fabulous for so many reasons: It's 7:30 and I've already gotten a good workout in, we're going to lunch to celebrate a coworker's birthday, I'll be home early enough to spend some quality time with the husband, and tomorrow is the Whole30 workshop.

Can't get more fabulous than that :)

One Thought Thursday

I know I've said it before, but this year is already WAAAY better than last year, health wise. I'm pretty excited about that. Despite this good health streak, I've been facing some challenges that I'm not quite sure how to handle. Some are personal, some are related to work, and others are related to healthcare. I was thinking out loud yesterday about how it seems like I never get a break but the quote below really put things into perspective. I'm dealing with the stuff in my life because it's meant to teach me something and bring me to the next level of awesome in life. Although I want to at times fast forward through things, I am trying to take the time to appreciate what I have and get the most out of this experience.

Wednesday Goal Check In

Not exactly what I wanted, but I have a 3lb gain this week. I know why, and part of it was out of my control - thanks, monthly bloat - but I'm not happy.

Other than that, I've been pretty on point.

I'm meditating daily, I'm throwing myself into my work but leaving it at the office, I'm trying to reach out to friends, I'm making it to hot yoga (which I think is doing more harm than good), and I'm making an effort to be more active. I'm also getting more sleep.

Blah. I want to go back to bed.
